Dashain: The Heart of Nepal's Festival Season
Every autumn, as the monsoon clouds clear and the rice fields turn golden, Nepal prepares for its biggest and most beloved festival: Dashain. Also called Bijaya Dashami, it is a time of family reunions, blessings, feasting, and celebrating the triumph of good over evil.
What Is Dashain?
Dashain is a Hindu festival celebrated over 15 days in the Nepali month of Ashwin (usually September or October),beginning on the first day of the bright lunar fortnight and ending on the full moon. It honors the goddess Durga and hervictory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. In some traditions, it also marks Lord Rama's victory over Ravana.
The Story Behind the Festival
According to legend, Mahishasura gained a boon that made him nearly invincible, and he used his power to terrorize theheavens and the earth. The gods combined their energies to create Durga, who fought the demon for days and finallydefeated him on the tenth day. That day is celebrated as Vijaya Dashami, the "Day of Victory."
Key Days of Dashain
Ghatasthapana (Day 1): The festival begins as families sow barley seeds in a sacred vessel of sand and soil, calledjamara. It is kept in a dark room, watered daily, and worshipped as a symbol of the goddess.
Fulpati (Day 7): Flowers, sacred leaves, and the jamara are carried in a procession to the household's worship space. InKathmandu, a grand parade takes place at Hanuman Dhoka.
Maha Ashtami (Day 8): A day of intense worship of Durga in her fierce forms. Many families make offerings at temples, and some follow traditions of ritual sacrifice.
Maha Navami (Day 9): The goddess is worshipped once more, and vehicles, tools, and instruments are honored andblessed.
Vijaya Dashami - Tika & Jamaara (Day 10): Vijaya Dashami, the tenth day, is one of the most important days of Dashain. Family members visit their elders to receive Tika—a mixture commonly made with rice, yogurt, and red vermilion—and Jamara.
Elders place Tika and Jamara on the foreheads or heads of younger family members and give blessings for good health, happiness, success, and prosperity. It is a beautiful tradition that strengthens family bonds and shows respect for elders.
Traditions That Make It Special
- Tika and Jamara: The blessing from elders is the emotional center of Dashain. Often accompanied by dakshina(money or a gift), it represents love, protection, and good fortune.
- Bamboo Swings (Ping): Villages build tall, handmade bamboo swings, and children and adults gather to enjoythem.
- Kite Flying: The autumn sky fills with colorful kites, and friendly rivalries break out across rooftops.
- Card Games: Playing cards is a popular pastime during the holidays, as families relax together.
- New Clothes: Many families buy new outfits to wear on Dashami.
Food of Dashain
Food is a major part of the celebration. Families prepare feasts featuring meat dishes (especially goat), rice, lentils, vegetables, pickles, and sweets. Treats like sel roti, a ring-shaped sweet rice bread, are enjoyed during the festiveseason. Sharing meals with relatives is as important as the rituals themselves.
A Festival of Homecoming
Dashain is perhaps most meaningful as a season of returning home. Millions of Nepalis working in cities or abroad travelback to their villages. Buses are packed, markets are busy, and homes fill with laughter. For many, the journey itself is partof the tradition.
